Where is kepler 22b

Years of data collected by Kepler still needs to be to picked through, so it is very possible that the perfect Earth-like planet is floating somewhere in there.

Keplerb is located about light years away from Earth, in the constellation of Cygnus. So as habitable as Keplerb might seem, as far as it is from us, it might not even exist anymore, or its features might be drastically different.

And by the time we get there if we do , we will probably forget why we were going there in the first place. Our future depends on it. Care about supporting clean energy adoption?

Three or more transits of equal periods are needed to catalog an object as an exoplanet candidate. Details Permalink to Details. Added to the Catalog 28 June Available for SOS.

Credit: NASA. In the case of Keplerb and similar systems, they have done a whole series of other ground-based observations, plus observations of one of the transits with the Spitzer space telescope in the infrared, plus some very in-depth modelling that excludes the vast majority of the astrophysical false positive scenarios.

That modelling is so complex that it requires the use of one of the worlds fastest supercomputers, that's operated by NASA. When astronomers discover new objects, they typically give them rather precise, but rather boring names. Keplerb is no exception, but Suzanne explains the jargon. The letter "A" always refers to the most massive star in the system, and is often omitted, particularly in cases when there are no other stars known in the system, as with Kepler The letters for planets always start at "b", as we never have a case where a planet is the most massive object in the system.

The number 22 doesn't mean it's the 22nd in the list of targets Kepler is monitoring that list is over , entries long , and neither is it the 22nd in the list of targets, in the light curves of which they found transit-like events that list is over 3, entries long.

Keplerb orbits a star that is broadly similar to our own Sun. Broadly speaking, planets fall into two main categories: those made of rock, and those made of gas. Gaseous planets, like Jupiter, tend to be larger, and lots of them have been found to date.

For example, we know that the radius of the planet is about 2. If we knew its mass, we could work out its average density: mass divided by volume. Venus would be much colder if it weren't for its thick atmosphere causing a gigantic greenhouse effect.
