Having not been to Canberra since my Year 6 excursion quite a few years ago I was very pleasantly surprised to see there's a lot more to Canberra than parliament and the war memorial! Some fantastic cafes, restaurants, bars and cool eclectic shops thrown in the mix. Whilst it is getting better, public transport is not great.
It helps to have a car to get around. Attractions are excellent but you got to watch the opening times. Most attractions close at 5pm!
Pluses are that most of the inner area is flat and easy to get around. With a large man-made lake, swimming, sailing or just sightseeing on a boat is great.
There are Ballooning companies that take you on a flight but you have to ring to organise it. I haven't been to Canberra since I was a kid, and had only ever visited the major attractions on daytrips with the family or for school excursions.
So I was more intrigued and impressed by the vibrant and eclectic food and bar scene in the city centre and along Lonsdale Street. I wish I had longer to explore more of that, though I was thoroughly impressed with what I had tried. Canberra really should promote itself as an indulgence location! Somewhere to snuggle into, and enjoy. The attractions are all still there, and are still impressive and infinitely more interesting for an adult. I found it an incredibly walkable city, too.
It's mostly flat, and the walk around parts of Lake Burley Griffin was stunning - particularly in the morning and afternoon, with the sunlight pouring over building and trees.
Bike hire and rental motorised scooters, are available for those who want things a bit quicker. The buses seemed quite frequent, too, for those without cars.
My trip to Canberra was only overnight and I was not able to go and explore areas that I wanted. I am certainly planning a return when time permits to relax and enjoy. Getting around Canberra was easy, traffic was moderate. Long list of tourist sites to visit, plan your time well. Life is easy and slow.
Little traffic, and everything is 5 to 15min away. But always check the restaurants operating hours. Many of them close their kitchens during afternoon hours, even on weekends - did not like that. There are many exciting and interesting activities to do in Canberra and in the environs. We visited the National Library and Jerrabomberra Wetlands.
We had lunch at the Bookplate cafe at the the National Library which was very good. We also visited the Llewellyn Concert Hall for an Opera - seating was excellent. The staff were exceptionally good. Our door lock battery was not working so we were promptly moved to another room which my 90 yr old mum was very grateful for as she was tired from a very long drive and we received a bottle of wine and a free breakfast.
This made us very happy. I will always use this hotel when we visit my sister in Canberra from now on and have already recommended it to friends. Love the staff. Wish I could remember the name of the lady who was so helpful. She deserves a raise. We stayed with our one year old baby and found the staff very friendly and accomodating. Delicious breakfast in a lovely lounge room, diner at the restaurant also very pleasant. We just need to come back to enjoy the cosy fireplace sitting area Location was great!
Conveniently located in the CBD which is very accessible to shops and cafes. The hotel is also near bus stops closest stop is at the Legislative Assembly London Cct which was right behind the hotel. Staff were very attentive to my needs and brought whatever I requested immediately up to my room. My room was also very clean and quiet. I highly recommend Adina Canberra! The room was very clean and comfortable and the kitchenette was a real bonus and much better equipped than what I was expecting which was a real bonus as we were staying there over the Christmas period.
Location was excellent. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone and would certainly stay there again when visiting Canberra. We stayed in a queen room and were visiting Canberra for the marathon. Although a bit out of the centre of Canberra, it was an easy 10 min drive to all the attractions.
The bed was very comfortable and there was a daily housekeeping. The room was small but well designed and well appointed. We asked for a quiet room as visiting Canberra to see a very ill person and they provided us with the perfect fit.
Our room was not on the street front. We like Apart hotels so we can provide our own food etc and can do Clothes washing if we wish. Great courtyard. Really good functional travel place. We were visiting Canberra for the footy but it was also our wedding anniversary. We mentioned it in passing when chatting at Reception while checking in, and hour or so later there was a knock at our room and we were given a bottle of wine and some chocolate as congratulations on wedding anniversary.
Wonderful older style Canberra hotel with very tasteful renovations. We stayed in a Heritage room which had lovely furnishings and a great modern bathroom. Conveniently located near Galleries and Parliament.
